7 Steps to a Good Legacy Plan

As you decide what legacy you will leave, you may be wondering what steps you can take to start your legacy-planning journey. The following 7 steps will help you create a lasting legacy to serve your Catholic parish, school, Bishop’s Appeal Endowment, and many more ministries and Catholic causes that help people discover Jesus.

1. Pray.

The best way you can discern what legacy you will leave is by taking time to pray. Open your heart to understand what legacy God desires for you to leave. By allowing God to show you the path you are meant to follow, you will have the guidance and inspiration you need to begin your legacy.

2. Write Down What is Important.

The next step in the legacy planning process is to gather information about yourself, your loved ones and the property you own. You can use the Catholic Foundation Planning Your Legacy Guide to collect information, so you leave the right assets to the right people in the right way. Request your copy here!

3. Meet With the Catholic Foundation.

The Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Green Bay is happy to partner with you as you decide what legacy you will leave for the Church. We go over what’s important to you. Then, we discuss options for your legacy to match your interests and share Jesus with people for years to come.

4. Speak With an Attorney.

Talk to a knowledgeable estate planning attorney who can prepare the necessary legal documents, such as a Will, trust or medical directive. Bring your Catholic Foundation Planning Your Legacy Guide with you, and fill it out for a confidential meeting with your attorney.

5. Understand Your Plan.

A good plan will promptly transfer your property to beneficiaries you select. Property can be transferred by a Will or trust, a deed or beneficiary designation. You should review your plan with your attorney, so you understand it and are confident it reflects your priorities.

6. Sign Your Documents.

Your plan is not effective until you sign your estate documents. Different documents have different requirements, including being signed in the presence of one or more witnesses or a notary. Your attorney understands these requirements and can help you with this part of the process.

7. Funeral Planning.

Having a funeral plan in place helps your loved ones fulfill your wishes for your celebration of life and makes planning easier for them after you are gone.

Now that you know the steps, one question remains: What legacy will YOU leave?

It is our pleasure to assist you in this journey as you move forward in creating a plan for your future and leaving an impactful legacy.
